Microverse is a global online school for software developers. It has 500+ students in 100 countries. With a record number of applicants, Microverse needed to streamline their admissions process to ensure they could identify the best candidates. The new admissions experience guides potential students through training, coding challenges, and interviews that allow the admissions team to confidently and effectively select the right candidates.

Empowering the admissions staff

The Micorverse admissions team needed to strike a balance between filtering out candidates without turning applicants away. We worked with the Microverse admissions team to gather requirements, understand the admissions process workflow, and how the team reviews applications. The school’s biggest differentiator is its payment model: you don’t owe anything until you get a job. Selecting candidates that are set up to complete the program successfully is essential to make their business sustainable.

Applicant-centered design

Applicants must complete preparation work and tests that can take up to a few weeks. Throughout the application process, the UX keeps applicants informed and motivated about their progress. The experience uses friendly and familiar language rather than admission staff oriented terms and concepts. The result was a process that, while lengthy, feels exciting and natural.

Making a long task less overwhelming

Through a heuristic analysis of the current process, we identified where applicants were getting stuck, making mistakes, and dropping out of the process.

We divided the experience into five distinct stages and iterated on the workflow to find the right moment to ask applicants to complete course work and submit code tests. Using progressive disclosure, the process is broken down into small steps and feels less overwhelming.

UI components library

We explored the brand’s existing digital identity and built a UI component library with UI building blocks that can be reused. These range from buttons to input elements, scrolling lists, hover states, progress bars, and grids. Microverse can now assembled together the different components to build new pages ensuring consistency across all platforms.
