GMB offers online physical training programs to almost 100,000 users around the world. The website template for their video programs they had used to start their business had become a limiting factor due to the rapid business growth. They needed a strategic design partner to transition to an online platform that allowed customers to track their fitness progress and trainers to build personalized training plans.

Positioning GMB as a habit-building tool that stands out from follow-along workouts

A competitive analysis revealed that most physical training programs available online rely on a follow along approach. One of GMB’s major differentiators became their mindful approach to training. The UX emphasized correct technique and building upon movements learned in previous sessions. We also reviewed educational tools such as DuoLingo, Code Academy, and Headspace to make GMB a didactic and habit building tool.

Saving time in development with a responsive grid system

Users access their training programs from multiple devices. With context of use in mind, we designed for coherence across devices. The product looks and functions the same between devices and platforms. Core feature sets are present in every variant of the product and the user can begin and complete tasks regardless of device. We were able to save time in development ensuring the same grid works for both desktop and tablet.

Designing and testing a powerful and intuitive video player

At the heart of the online workout product was the video player. A major design challenge was avoiding a crowded video interface, specially on mobile devices. In addition to the standard video player controls like play, pause, and fast forward, we had to incorporate controls such as exercise timers, countdowns, and exercise navigation.

The video player experience is designed to allow users to do their exercise after watching video rather than while they are watching it. Videos show technique tips on screen.

We user tested and iterated on the video player feature to ensure an optimal experience in different devices and orientations. Through testing, we  achieved the right amount of control without disrupting the workout experience.

Mastering new skills and building a workout habit

Users get a personalized session based on their time availability and how they are feeling that day. Each workout session consists of five phases that support GMB’s mindful approach to training.  Rather than follow along workout, the phases approach gives the user free time to practice and improve their technique. An introspective review at the end of a session encourages mindfulness and helps users track their progress.
